Family can sometimes transform into a source of torment, where those we love most possess a unique ability to create personal hells. The bonds we share with our parents, grandparents, and siblings shape our affections and our interactions with the world. A small mistake can quickly turn into a deep nightmare.
Family dynamics encompass both a tangible and visible layer that remains intact as long as our memory sustains it, and a mysterious, submerged layer that stretches back through generations, fading into darkness.
Christian Fuchs experienced the unfortunate triad of madness, death, and abandonment within his immediate family. Fortunately, his grandmother, who raised him in a house in Lima adorned with portraits and ancestral stories, provided a beacon of hope.
Within this sanctuary of ancestors, Fuchs rebuilt his symbolic home. He embarked on a journey of sincere love and relentless inquiry, seeking to piece together and understand his family’s past.
Through the detailed examination of his predecessors and exhaustive research into records, documents, letters, and portraits, Christian undertook a shamanic—or performative—journey centered on a chosen ancestor.
He immersed himself in that life for months, adopting the ancestor’s diet, reading their literature, and striving to connect with—or even invoke—their spirit. He then crafted period-appropriate clothing and assumed the personality of his ancestor, capturing this profound connection in a portrait.
This effort resulted in a unique fusion of deep and indescribable love, prompting reflection on the hidden layers of family and questioning the relevance of our ancestors today.
Family and ancestry have always been pivots of our identity throughout human history. Traditionally, our deceased relatives helped us understand the living, serving as a lens through which we viewed our world.
Modern times have introduced an unprecedented segmentation of reality into distinct domains—such as religion, science, work, family, love, sex, and leisure—all perceived as outcomes of individual will.
We find ourselves in a constant state of decision-making about who we want to be, with an increasing number of aspects of life becoming matters of personal choice.
This shift represents a significant liberation from tradition and the past, replaced by more adaptable hierarchies. Yet it also carries a substantial burden of existential anxiety, manifested in our contemporary obsession with identity and exploited by politicians and marketers alike.
Christian Fuchs’ life story offers a unique and compelling approach to this dilemma, urging us to explore a theme often unexamined and beyond the edge of our consciousness.
Christian Fuchs’ work represents a lifelong quest, one that demands extraordinary determination and persistence.
